"Accessible" is a relative term. For example, some blind people might consider a keyboard accessible if they can independently switch it on and off, and change the instrument sounds. Others won't consider any device to be fully accessible unless a blind person can independently operate 100 percent of all of the features which a sighted person could access. For the highest level of independent access, we recommend the Yamaha Motif XF series. We sell these keyboards and we can train you how to use one without sight. Our trainer is blind and can teach you over the phone. Speaker phone optional but definitely recommended.

The Motif is the only currently available keyboard workstation that is fully accessible to the blind. Keyboard workstations from the other major manufacturers use touch screens and other elements that make them impossible for a blind person to reliably navigate. While the Motif can be navigated in its entirety, it doesn't provide any spoken feedback. A blind person that wishes to operate it will need to be trained in the patterns of key commands and the arrangement of the various screens, but, with this information, can completely access all features of the instrument.

Motif XF Series Described in Detail

Yamaha pulled out the stops with the MOTIF XF series, giving you an unbelievably feature-packed instrument for music performance and music production. This Next-generation workstation features an extraordinary collection of voices for you to get creative with. In fact, the MOTIF XF features an enormous 741MB of waveforms - that's twice the size of the MOTIF XS and nine times the size of the original! The Yamaha MOTIF XF offers everything from acoustic sounds to vintage synths to modern tones for hip-hop production. And with the new OS, complete with tap tempo, automapping, and a customizable user interface, the MOTIF XF is more powerful yet easier to use than ever.

When it's time to come up with new song ideas, you can count on your MOTIF XF to be your personal hit-making assistant. Use the 16-track sequencer to lay everything out the way you hear it in your head. Then, record everything via USB to keep track of your tunes. In fact, you've got USB, Ethernet, or optional FireWire computer connectivity going for your Yamaha MOTIF XF. And speaking of options, there are two flash board slots for adding up to 2GB of additional Yamaha content - that's huge.

There are loads of voices (1,664+), an awesome arpeggiator (7,000+ patterns!), a high-quality keyboard (standard FSX action), scores of high-tech effects made to sound like vintage gear, and remote control DAW integration. Description of Training on the Yamaha Motif from Dancing Dots

Dancing Dots can offer training for the full range of Yamaha Motif keyboard workstations. A blind person that wishes to operate it will need to be trained in the patterns of key commands and the arrangement f the various screens, but, with this information, can completely access all features of the instrument.

Training ranges from introductory to advanced topics. Due to the organization of the Motif's operation, we are able to quickly cover the basics, and then continue to increasingly detailed explorations of advanced functions. All students should receive basic training. Additionally, students should receive advanced training in the areas that are appropriate to the way that they intend to use the Motif: live performance, studio sessions, independent arranging/writing, etc.

Basic Training

The core training for the Motif generally requires between 5 to 10 hours, and includes:
* Orientation to the control panel
* Selecting instrument voices (both directly, and by using the search function)
* Creating a set of commonly used voices for quick access
* Basic customization of a voice
* Selecting preset performances (keyboard splits and layers)
* A high level introduction to the master controller/live performance mode
* A high level introduction to the recording/sequencing functions

Live Performance

Intended for customers that will be using their Motif to perform live, this will typically require another 10 to 15 hours, depending on the complexity of the customer's needs, and includes:

* Detailed exploration of performance mode
* Using the performance mode to create keyboard splits and layers
* Editing of advanced performance settings (tone, levels, effects, and more)
* Storing and organizing performance setups
* Introduction to the master controller mode
* Creating quick access lists of voices and performances, for quick recall during live performance

Studio Performance

Intended for customers that will be working as session musicians, this is similar to Live Performance. However, there is less focus on the master mode, and greater focus on:

* Utility mode settings that are required to sync with MIDI gear when playing on sessions
* How to bypass effects and other stand-alone features that are used for live performance, but not for studio work

Arranging/Writing

This training is intended for live performers that need to create backing tracks, or for anyone that needs to produce full songs with their Motif. The basic recording functions can be explained in 5 hours. However, advanced subjects that may be needed include:

* Mixing
* Creating an audio recording of songs that are saved on the Motif
* Pattern-based recording (for beat/groove creation)
* Using sampling in songs
* Recording live instruments and vocals
* Backing up sequences to flash drives

Additional Services

* Connecting the Motif to a computer, including USB or Firewire driver setup, and configuration of Sonar to work with the Motif
* Configuration and setup of the accessible Motif editor software
* Loading additional instrument sounds in to the Motif
* Creating custom voices, splits, and layers that might be needed for a customer's live performance
